There’s plenty of art to see in museums and galleries around New York City, but when the weather is lovely, it’s nice to have options available to enjoy art in public areas.
On a warm day this week, I traveled through the East Village on my way to SOHO. I went that way so I could walk down Houston Street. At the corner of 2nd Ave and Houston St., I noticed a little park called the first street garden. (Actually it is mostly on Houston Street but does open on to first Street.)
Once an overgrown empty lot, First Street Garden is now an open art space that hosts a busy calendar of installations. It really isn’t a park as it has no benches and while it has some greenery its main feature is a very long wall.
