On my way to the new shopping center at east 116th street, I often pass a little patch of life not often seen in NYC. Most of the time it is a garden or some enclave with an unusual dwelling but today I was greeted by an unexpected red chicken…
What appeared to be just a garden, taking its winter break, was home to about 8 chickens. They seemed to come out of nowhere when the “feeder” came into the yard. The man who cares for the chickens said that he gathers about 6 to 8 eggs a day.
Looking around the yard I noticed an assortment of gardening tools. These community gardens are very popular within the city. They are often found in vacant lots and during the nicer weather are much utilized for neighborhood gatherings.
It was bitter cold day but the chickens didn’t seem to mind. However, I guess the occupants of this house may have gone south for the winter.
