NYC – Converted Carriage Stables

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In the nineteenth century, wealthy people lived on 5th avenue or on the blocks between 5th avenue and Madison Avenue. This was the time when New York City was growing from 14th street up through the 80’s. This was true on the east side where many mansions were built.

During this time these east-side wealthy people kept their carriages and horses in building east of Madison avenue. The west side, while it had fewer of these, also had public stables. There is a section of the west side called “Stable row”.

I have been finding some of these as I take my walks. I hope to find more/
